Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long has Ellis County Deck & Fence been in the business of building fences?
A: We have been building not only fences but also decks and arbors since 1991.

Q: What is the most popular type of fence that you are building?
A: Western red cedar fences are the most popular in both side by side, as well as board on board, including 6' or 8' height.

Q: What are different types of wood used in building fences?
A: Whitewood or Spruce is the cheapest while Redwood is most expensive. Dollar-for-dollar the best value and longevity is a western red cedar variety. Western red cedar is naturally impervious to bugs, termites and wood rot.

Q: How long does the average fence last?
A: A well built custom fence can last 20-25 years, while a panel, or prefab fence, usually lasts only 5-7 years.

Q: What makes a custom fence last so much longer?
A: Mainly the construction method and materials used. We only use .095 2 3/8 galvanized posts - 9' length for 6' fences, and 11' length for 8' fences. Steel posts won't rot off like wooden landscape timbers and won't bow or twist like 4x4 posts. Galvanized posts don't rust out either. Also, by setting posts 30"-36" in concrete you are making a solid foundation for the fence. For our custom fences, we only use 2x4 treated pine rails for the backbone of the fence, making for many years without fear of decay, rot or termites, a much wiser choice than smaller 2x3 pine rails which won't last as long.

Q: How long does it take to install a fence?
A: The average fence takes 3-5 days depending on the size of the job, but all jobs are different.

Q: What can make a fence last longer?
A: Staining can help to make the color last, and also help prevent wood rot. A base board, or rot board as it's called, on the bottom of the fence helps keep the fence out of the dirt and deter termites from invading the fence.

Q: What can a consumer expect to pay for a custom built wooden fence?
A: Whitewood fences range from 12-20 dollars a linear ft. depending on size and style, while a cedar fence ranges from 17-35 dollars a linear ft. depending on height and design. Gates are additional, as is tear out and haul off of any old fencing.

Q: What are the benefits of a wooden fence?
A: Added value to the property, and privacy for the home owner are the most common benefits of a new fence.

Q: What makes you stand apart from other fence builders?
A: I build my own fences, arbors and decks, unlike most companies that sub-contract the work to other crews. I personally go to each house and meet with the homeowner, discuss any issues that they may have. I also sign all contracts personally. By doing business in this manner I have the ultimate control over each and every project. I don't use salesmen to deliver customers. I stand on the very principal that every one of my customers is the only customer at that time.
